  2. Hendersonville, NC, for dinner and a wine-tasting program. Also Chuck was honored as a 50-year member of the American Chemical Society. Go back up to the map
  3. Newport, TN, after the meeting (No. 2) to try to get a jump on the next day's travels. Go back up to the map
  4. St Charles, MO. We are racing to get to stop #5, where we plan to camp. Go back up to the map
  5. Oak Grove County Park, IA. Chuck had discovered this lovely campground on a trip several years ago and wanted me to enjoy it also. It was worth the rush to get here. We did see some wildlife. Go back up to the map
    5A Sundance, WY. We had hoped to get a little farther than this, but we were both tired. Go back up to the map
  6. Jim's home in Livingston, MT. We settled in for a visit. Early highlights included a walk in Sacajawea Park next to the Yellowstone River. Go back up to the map
  7. Gates of the Mountains, near Helena, MT. This is a boat tour, with a very knowledgeable guide. Going around the bend of the canyon of the Missouri River, the mountains spring into view. This area was named by Lewis and Clark. We had lunch at an area where they had camped. Go back up to the map
  8. We return to Jim's home in Livingston. From there, we enjoyed a hike to Hyalite Falls. One of Jim's hobbies is ice climbing there. It looks different in the early fall compared to his pictures - see MontanaIce.com. We also visited Jim's workplace, Greater Yellowstone Coalition. This is a group of organizations working to preserve the ecosystem of Yellowstone National Park and the surrounding areas. Go back up to the map
    8A We stopped briefly to look at the source of the Missouri River. This is at Three Forks, MT, where the Madison, Gallatin, and Jefferson Rivers join to form the Missouri. Go back up to the map

  9. Mt St Helens, which we viewed from the Windy Ridge Viewpoint. It lived up to its name as the wind was strong and cold. The destruction on the mountainside was almost frightening. It is still pretty desolate. Go back up to the map
  10. Visit Chuck's Cousin in Portland, OR. We also got the oil changed. Go back up to the map
  11. Camp near Sisters, OR. Visit Jo's friend. Cold the next morning - 28º; frankly, we weren't prepared for it! Go back up to the map

  13. We had hoped to visit Crater Lake, OR, but the north entrance was closed already, for no visible reason. Go back up to the map
  14. Sutherlin, OR, to vist Chuck's cousin who was spry and vigorous just before his 95th birthday! Go back up to the map
  15. Roseburg, OR, for two nights - we looked at real estate and the surrounding territory. Go back up to the map
  16. Jo gets dropped off at her friend's home in Chico, CA. A lovely visit there, including buying some interesting linen and some books. Go back up to the map

  22. Chuck arrives at Edward's apartment in San Diego, CA, and they celebrate the fact that Edward has completed the "California Fifty Finest" (climbs). Go back up to the map

  24. We attend the rehearsal of the orchestra in which Edward plays, the La Jolla Symphony. More about Edward at http://home.earthlink.net/~esquared/, his website. We spent another day there, doing wash, reorganizing, and so forth. Go back up to the map
  25. Since we had to go through Las Vegas, NV, to get to our next destination, (#26), we thought we'd spend the night there and see the Cirque du Soleil production, . We had good seats and the production was outstanding. Even the stage is one of the performers! Go back up to the map
  26. Cedar City, UT, where we looked at real estate. Go back up to the map
  27. Williams, AZ. We were running out of time and didn't actually go there. Go back up to the map
  28. Flagstaff, AZ, we looked at real estate. Some of the most beautiful scenery of our trip, such as Vermillion Cliffs, is between Cedar City and Flagstaff. Go back up to the map
    28A After leaving Flagstaff, we had some car trouble and ending up spending the night in Grants, NM Go back up to the map
    28B Motel in Sayre, OK. We had the oil changed the next morning. Go back up to the map
